A 55-year-old Wildwood man riding a lawnmower on a Sumter County highway was killed Wednesday when he was rear-ended by an SUV, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.
The Wildwood man was airlifted to Ocala Regional Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.
The driver of the SUV, a 49-year-old Oxford woman, was taken to Leesburg Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.
According to the FHP report, the woman was traveling south on County Road 229 in a Kia Sorrento at about 1:20 p.m. when she failed to slow down and struck the mower. The impact caused the man to be ejected from the mower.
While riding lawn mowers provide convenience and performance for professional landscapers as well as property owners, these powerful machines also come with serious safety hazards, especially when driven on roadways.
