A 27-year-old Sumter County man has been arrested for allegedly molesting two small children he was supposed to be watching.
The Wildwood resident was charged with lewd and lascivious conduct. He remained in the Sumter County jail Wednesday with bail set at $10,000.
The alleged crime occurred in March and involved a young girl and boy. The man was arrested last week after a State Attorney’s Office investigation.
According to the investigative report, the girl apparently told investigators that on at least three occasions, the man dragged her into the bedroom with his clothes off. She allegedly told police that the man tried to force her to remove her clothes and, when she refused, he tried to force her to look at his crotch area.
There were no accusations that the man ever sexually touched either child. The report does add that the man is also accused of placing the children on top of each other to simulate a sexual act.
While all criminal charges are serious and should never be taken lightly, there are few crimes that elicit such strong emotions like the crime of child molestation. Due to the sensitive nature of sex crimes, it should be clear that these charges must be dealt with urgently. Because of the gravity of sex crimes charges, police, prosecutors and the media tend to forget that all defendants are innocent until proven guilty.
