A crash on Saturday afternoon in The Villages involved drivers recounting two different scenarios.
Reports indicate the collision occurred on County Road 466A at Buena Vista Boulevard close to 2 p.m.
The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office reported that one driver said he was heading northbound on Buena Vista Boulevard, turning east onto County Road 466A, and claimed he had a yellow light. The other driver said he was heading east on County Road 466A and had a green light.
No one was harmed in the crash, and no tickets were issued because of the conflicting stories.
According to reports, a traffic sign was knocked down during the crash.
This case shows how proving liability in car crashes can be complex due to conflicting statements between drivers. Police reports and witness statements may help to clear up any discrepancies, but this is not always the case.
While we all lean toward the mentality that the at-fault driver in a car accident will do the right thing, this does not always happen. The at-fault driver could have been engaging in reckless or negligent behavior when the crash occurred, and they may not want to be held liable for the accident as they could face legal action, have their insurance premiums increased, or have to pay for damages out of their pocket.
Any of these reasons can be the driving force behind why a negligent motorist opts to lie about how an accident happened. Examples of negligent or reckless driving behaviors are:
Fault in a car crash is not always easy to determine, and even insurance adjusters who do this on a daily basis sometimes find this task quite challenging. If the insurance company finds that denying liability may help their bottom line, they will opt for this route even if evidence points to the contrary. The insurance company will often do this to minimize their payouts.
After a car accident, you want to ensure the insurance company pays you the total and fair compensation.
As we mentioned above, this is not always the case, which is why it can be beneficial to have our Villages Car Accident Attorneys at Whittel & Melton.
