This week, an SUV crashed into one of their stalled ATVs in the roadway, killing a 16-year-old boy from Ocoee and hospitalizing a 14-year-old girl from Clermont with serious injuries.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the pair attempted to tow the unlit, stalled ATV from the road when an SUV glided over a crest in the road and smashed into one of the ATVs.
The hospital staff transported the 57-year-old SUV to the hospital with minor injuries.
FHP is currently investigating the crash. Charges are pending.
All-terrain vehicles, commonly called ATVS, are motorized recreational vehicles used primarily for off-road riding. While these vehicles are relatively safe when used properly, some ATVs are unreasonably dangerous despite how cautious operators may be. Operating recreational vehicles appropriately can still result in debilitating injuries. Accidents result in traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, and amputation. Even those who wear helmets and protective gear can suffer severe injuries in a sudden collision. Like all off-road accidents, the faster a vehicle travels on uneven terrain significantly increases the chances of suffering a catastrophic injury.
Many ATV accident-related deaths occur due to design defects and operator negligence. Some of the dangers associated with ATVs include the following:
Similar to motorcycle accidents, ATV accidents often deliver severe injuries to riders because drivers and passengers have very little protection against impact. Those involved in ATV accidents often suffer life-changing injuries. Sadly, many ATV crash victims are teenagers and children.
