Two women were killed and two other people were injured recently after a multi-vehicle crash involving golf carts in The Villages.
The incident happened on County Road 466A at Morse Boulevard at about noon.
The Florida Highway Patrol believe that the driver of an SUV, a 58-year-old Fruitland Park man, suffered a medical emergency while driving through the intersection.
The man became unconscious as the SUV traveled into the outside lane, then hit a curb and traveled onto the grass shoulder. The SUV hit a speed limit sign, then accelerated into a designated golf cart path.
A 62-year-old Villages man was driving in a golf cart and saw the approaching SUV. He was able to swerve out of the vehicle’s path, but the SUV clipped the golf cart on the right side.
The SUV then hit the back of another golf cart. The driver and the passenger were ejected. The 66-year-old female driver was taken to The Villages Regional Medical Hospital, where she died. The passenger of the golf cart, 68-year-old New York woman, was taken to Ocala Regional Medical Center, where she died.
A 34-year-old Wildwood pedestrian was also hit. He was seriously injured and taken to Ocala Regional Medical Center.
The driver of the SUV was taken to The Villages Regional Medical Hospital for serious injuries.
Golf carts driven on roadways are a common sight in The Villages and other retirement communities. For many retirees, golf carts are a more fuel efficient and convenient alternative to cars and trucks. These carts are ideal for making short trips around town and have become a very popular mode of transportation.
However, the fact is that golf carts are not as safe as the automobiles they share the road with. They do not offer the same kind of safety features as a car. Golf cart drivers and passengers are especially prone to injury when their carts are hit by much heavier cars or SUVs.
