A Bonita Springs motorcyclist was killed Sunday night when his bike left the road and struck a drainage ditch in Umatilla, according to reports.
The Florida Highway Patrol believes the crash happened around 9:30 p.m. at State Road 19 and Golden Gem Drive.
The 56-year-old Bonita Springs man was riding his Harley-Davidson south on SR 19 when he went off the road for unknown reasons and struck a drainage ditch. The man and the motorcycle were ejected onto the road during the collision.
Troopers said the man was not wearing a helmet. He was taken to Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford where he later died.
The crash is currently under further investigation.
Motorcycle helmet laws vary from state to state. In the state of Florida, a person over 21 years of age may operate or ride upon a motorcycle without wearing a helmet if they are covered by an insurance policy providing for at least $10,000 in medical benefits for injuries incurred as a result of a crash.
Regardless of someone’s skills or ability on a motorcycle, there are greater risks associated with driving a motorcycle than compared to other vehicles. With that said, reckless or careless drivers can cause serious injuries to a motorcyclist even if the biker is wearing a helmet.
Our Villages Motorcycle Accident Lawyers at Whittel & Melton encourage everyone to wear a helmet on a motorcycle, however those that choose not to should still be protected from negligent drivers. If you or someone you love has been injured or killed in a motorcycle accident, we may be able to help you recover financial damages if a negligent party can be identified.
