Man Attacked by Alligator in Sumter County

A man was airlifted to a hospital after he was attacked by an alligator in Sumter County Tuesday night.

The 58-year-old man was attacked by the gator while along County Road 311 in Bushnell Tuesday evening.

The 8 to 9 foot gator injured the man’s right leg.

He was airlifted to Ocala Regional. At this time, there is no further information on his condition.

Florida Fish and Wildlife confirms the gator was captured and euthanized.

It is unknown at this time what events led up to the attack.

Alligators are powerful reptiles that can move very fast and have sharp claws and teeth. Florida has lots of gators everywhere. You can find gators near any bodies of water, near golf courses and even lurking in your own backyard. Despite the fact that alligators tend to avoid humans, they will aggressively protect their nests and their young if they feel anyone is threatening them. Also, if they are regularly fed by humans, they start to lose their natural fear of people, which means anyone in their near proximity is in danger.

If you are lucky enough to survive an alligator attack, your bite injuries could result in a severe infection and possibly the loss of a limb. That is why it is never wise to disobey signs that read “Beware of Alligators.”

If you, or someone you care for has suffered from an alligator attack, the owner of the property where the attack occurred could be responsible for any damages. Owners are accountable for the protection of their property and for properly warning guests of any dangers.
