Electrical Meter Blamed for Sumter County House Fire That Injured Man and Killed Two Dogs

The cause of a house fire that injured two Sumter County firefighters, burned a resident, and killed two dogs was determined to be an electrical meter.

The injuries to the firefighters and residents were not life-threatening.

The fire happened Thursday morning at a home in Webster.

According to a Sumter County Fire & EMS spokesman, crews arrived to find the house on fire, and the blaze spread rapidly. Firefighters put the blaze out, but not before it had destroyed the home.

According to reports, two firefighters sustained minor orthopedic-type injuries. One was taken to the hospital and released, and the other was treated on the scene. One resident was treated for a minor burn on his hand. The fire originated from the electrical meter.

Many different things can cause house fires. Faulty installation of meters, gas lines, or appliances, defective control valves and connectors, and poor maintenance by a landlord, gas company, repair technicians, and appliance manufacturers and distributors could all contribute to a house fire.
