A 61-year-old motorist was arrested Thursday after he pointed a gun at another motorist during a road rage incident.
According to an arrest affidavit, the man told Umatilla police that another motorist ran a stop sign and cut him off. He claims he only pulled out a BB gun from his glove box and put in on his dashboard to frighten the woman.
However, the woman told officers she was at the stop sign and waiting to turn onto Bulldog Lane when she thought the man was going to let her pull out in front. She said the man then pulled out what she believed was a real gun and pointed it at her before placing it on his dashboard, which scared her.
Officers confiscated the BB gun and arrested the man on aggravated assault charges. He was released from Lake County jail after he posted $2,000 bond.
Actions like tailgating, weaving through traffic, cutting off other drivers, braking suddenly, and passing on the right before cutting off other drivers too closely are all common road rage behaviors. If you are the victim of a road rage accident, there are several things you should do in order to keep yourself, as well as any passengers, safe.
First, and foremost, make sure you and your passengers are not injured. If so, seek immediate medical attention. If you are capable after the crash, try to do the following:
Engaging with an emotionally charged driver, can be scary, so is is usually best to call the police. If you ever feel threatened by the other driver after the accident occurs, keep the police on the line and stay in your car. Do not confront an aggressive driver.
The truth is that drivers exhibiting road rage are often quick to flee the scene. Due to this, it is very important to try and record or take pictures of the accident site and license plates with a cell phone or camera. If you cannot record or get any pictures, then try to document as much information as you can immediately after the collision occurs.
